IHSS

The Hong Kong Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences (IHSS), established in 2001 at HKU, has a mission to promote innovative, multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research and teaching in the humanities and social sciences, with a focus on China. The Institute seeks to provide a vibrant hub for studying the multi-facets of the Chinese civilization and its long developmental history using both new and traditional approaches.

Our research is currently grouped into four major themes:

  • Quantitative History (QH)
  • Chinese Business History (CBH)
  • Asian Religious Connections (ASIAR)
  • Delta on the Move: The Becoming of the Greater Bay Region, 1700 – 2000 (DoM)
